Helpful Tips When Moving: Stay Organized & Stress Less
Updated: Aug 17
As a consultant who helps clients pack and prepare for upcoming moves, I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming the process can feel. The good news? A little planning goes a long way. Here’s one of my top tips to help make your move smoother and less stressful.
Pack a “First-Day” Bag for Each Room
One simple but powerful strategy is to pack a designated bag (or box) for each room that you’ll keep with you during the move—not on the moving truck.
Think of these as your essentials:
Bedroom: A few days’ worth of clothes, pajamas, and undergarments
Office: Personal computer, chargers, and important work supplies
Bathroom: Toiletries, medications, towels, and daily necessities
Kitchen: Snacks, easy meals, and drinks for before, during, and after the move
Entryway/General Items: Coats, umbrellas, keys, and everyday grab-and-go items
Pets: Food, bowls, leashes, medications, and comfort items
Why This Matters
Moving day can be chaotic, and boxes don’t always end up exactly where you expect right away. Having these essentials easily accessible helps you:
Avoid digging through boxes late at night
Keep important items from getting lost
Feel more settled your first day in your new space
